Commentary Just over two kilometres from the Brisbane CBD and home to the Royal Brisbane Hospital and Ballymore Park, Herston has maintained its popularity with buyers over the last five years.

The trend toward inner city living has resulted in a demand for housing in the area and in turn an increase in the number of higher density unit and townhouse complexes, although there is still a high proportion of older styles homes in the suburb.

Popular with health professionals for its easy access to the hospital Herston is bordered by Spring Hill, Bowen Hills, Wilston and Kelvin Grove.

These suburbs along with the city centre, Lutwyche and Newmarket provide Herston residents with major supermarket and retail shopping facilities as well as public and private schools.

University students are also a common sight around Herston with the University of Queensland Medical School located alongside the Hospital and the Queensland University of Technology Kelvin Grove campus also nearby.
Raisy Park along Enoggera Creek has bike and walkways for residents, while Downey Park is also nearby in neighbouring Wilston. Victoria Park is also a popular spot for picnic and the occasional golf shot.

Although Herston does not have a train station (the closest is Bowen Hills) regular bus routes into and out of the city centre and to major shopping centres in the area ensure that the daily commute is hassle free.

The continuing trend towards inner city living ensures Herston's popularity among not only health professionals but also among students and young professionals looking for easy access to employment.

According to the 2006 Census there were 1,795 people living in the suburb with a median age of 29. The median individual income was $537 per week. Of all occupied private dwellings 40.2% were either fully owned or being purchased; 52.7% were being rented.
