Commentary Located 20 kilometres east of Brisbane's CBD, beside Moreton Bay, Birkdale's residential population has grown rapidly over the past decade.

Birkdale has an extensive range of housing from older affordable homes to expensive canal front homes. Towards the top end of the Birkdale housing market, more prestigious homes are located in St James Park, and Bayview Heights Estate. St James Park is an established leafy district and features home allotments of approximately 4,000 square metres.

The Aquatic Paradise development, which has been developed over the past decade, is dominated by waterfront housing containing prestige homes offering direct boating access to Moreton Bay.

Birkdale is self-contained in terms of the retail facilities available. Shoppers have the option of visiting the Birkdale Gardens community shopping centre or can venture slightly further a field to the neighbouring suburb of Capalaba.

Commuters can take of advantage of public transport with easy access to buses and train services.

With easy access to Moreton Bay, Birkdale's popularity is reflected in the strong demand for property in the area and subsequently its increasing sale prices.

According to the 2001 Census there were 13,561 people living in the suburb with a median age of 34. The median individual income was between $400 and $499 per week. Of all occupied private dwellings 77% were either fully owned or being purchased; 18% were being rented.
